Types of Cerebral Palsy – How Many is It ?


Children with cerebral palsy can be devided in two types different ways, according to the affected body parts and movement disorder.

Types of cerebral palsy with affected body parts most common are : cerebral palsy hemiplegia – arm, legs and muscles on one side of the body are affected, cerebral palsy diplegiaspasticity is present in both of the legs and is more severe than in the arm, cerebral palsy quadriplegia – affects all parts of the body, cerebral palsy monoplegia – one limb usually an arm is affected. Also types of cerebral palsy is cerebral palsy triplegia – both sides of the body are involved but one limb usually the arm is relatively spared, inside types of cerebral palsy hemiplegia there is cerebral palsy double hemiplegia – both sides of the body involved but one side more than the other arms are usually more affected.

Characteristic  types of cerebral palsy with the movement disorder : spastic cerebral palsy or spasticity – high muscle tone and imbalance between muscle group, cerebral palsy athetosis – fluctuating tone leads to poor midrange control, inadequate head, shoulder and trunk control. Cerebral palsy ataxia – problem with balance and controlling the position of the body space.

Types of cerebral palsy opposite with spasticity is cerebral palsy flaccidity – low muscle tone. Cerebral palsy mixed – presence of two or more physiological types as mentioned for examples spasticity and athetosis. Cerebral palsy dystonia – fluctuating muscle tone varying from very high until very low. Cerebral palsy balismus – same problems wth athetosis but only in a more severe from staying in a good position and contolling movement. Cerebral palsy rigidity – high muscle tone, continuously resist slow passive movement.
