Cerebral Palsy, What is it ?

Cerebral palsy is defined as a disorder of movement caused by non progressive damage or lesion to the brain, the lesion is present at , or soon after birth and before the growth and development of the brain is completed or immature brain. Cerebral palsy occurs in approximately two per one thousand live births caused with by prenatal complications,  perinatal and postnatal complications.

The resulting problem in children with cerebral palsy is motor incoordination, the coordination of muscle action with an inability to maintain postures and balance,  cerebral palsy also commonly are reported to have dificullity performing academic and self care skills. Because the part of brain children with cerebral palsy are interrelated, there may be many associated neurological abnormalities, such as sensory deficits, language delays, sensory integration deficits, mental retardation or intellectual impairment, seizure disorders, emotional problems and secondary orthopedic abnormalities.

The type or classification of motor deficits seen in children with cerebral palsy is variable. There are four types of cerebral palsy spasticity, athetosis, ataxia and flaccidity, Milani Comparetti defined the motor problem in cerebral palsy as a lack of freedem of choice in movement. Some children with cerebral palsy also have been described as tactually defensive, fear of movement or gravitational insecurity and developmental dyspraxia. It is possible that the sensory processing and motor planning deficits seen in children who have cerebral palsy may be only a result of their brain damage.

In children with cerebral palsy may be many lack of oromotor function, problem in drinking, biting, chewing and swallowing tend to occur with spastic quadriparesis or severe dyskinetic disorder. Most of these people have to cope with ineffective eating patterns throughout their entire life.
